Background color on GnomeCanvas

Hi,

How do I set the background color for a GnomeCanvas?

Manipulating the GtkStyle of the canvas (style->bg[GTK_STATE_NORMAL])
changes the color, but it doesn't change it to the color specified.

Note that I am working on an 8 bit (256 color) display.
