Question about "documents"

I am a GNOME newbie so apologize if the question seems
obvious.

I am looking for the best way to handle "documents", that means:
if my program is a text editor, where should I store documents
pointers list (in which .c). Is there a standard way ?
a GNOME way ?

If you could provide usefull URLs...
