Adjusting window resizing

Hi,

A number of X apps (e.g. Emacs and gnome-terminal) restrict resizing to
character sized increments (as opposed to pixel sized increments).  Can
anyone point me to a way to implement this?  Presumably I will need to
know something about the font metrics of the window governing the size of
the window - in the case of gnome-terminal I suppose that this is the zvt
widget.
