applet widget reparenting

Is there any way to reparent a widget from a panel applet to an external
window created by that applet? I tried using gtk_widget_reparent() and
it exploded quite spectacularly taking the panel with it. It gave lots
of:

Gtk-WARNING **: invalid cast from `(unknown)' to `GtkWidget'
