By George, so it doesn't. And that's the same version of E, but a
different build. Weird.

I went looking for an E config option that might be related to this, but
nothing was immediately apparent.

So... the functionality is there, just this particular build of E isn't
doing something right. (Unless it is a config option somewhere.)
