We do have this one.  If it is not being used, is because someone
probably sprinkled a few more metadata calls outside the "begin
batch"/"end batch" calls.

Which seems to make sense, as someone reported gmc to be extremely
slow due to this recently (so this new access to the metadata outside
the begin/end batches has been a recent addition).
