this needs access to the providers internals, so it might make sense as
part of the provider's methods.

Also, we are now frozen for 1.3/2.0, so no new API can be added at this
point until we branch in CVS. So, yes, work on the patch, but having in
mind it won't be committed to CVS in the next 2 weeks or so.
