GRG (GNU Report Generator) is geared to produce LaTeX style output 
(i.e., marked up documents), so it should be able to do XML as well.  
It supports using SQL and other databases (though only one at a time
in its current state).  Could it be dismembered and/or rewrapped in 
CORBA for use in gnome-db?  It is available off www.gnu.org/software .
