Re[2]: [gnome-cyr] GUADEC: Russian team anyhow?

Hello Sergey.

The Board of
Directors GNOME Foundation.

http://www.unicode.org/pending/proposals.html написано "The
identification of the sponsor(s) must be included, along with postal
address and an electronic mail address or phone number".
The
Board of Directors

Thank you for taking the time to write to us with your idea. However,
there seems to be a bit of misunderstanding about how copyright is applied
to free software that I would like to clear up.

Under the Berne Treaty of 1984, authors automatically receive copyright for
works they create. If they do not want to claim this copyright, the only
alternative is to release it into the public domain -- at which point there
is no copyright on the work at all.

Software licenses can be based upon this copyright and the law supporting
it. The GNU General Public License is one license which does so. Of
course, the GNU GPL is different from many other software licenses: it
offers the user a number of rights they would not otherwise have, so long
as they follow certain conditions. One such condition is that the software
must remain under the terms of the GNU GPL.

This is what we refer to when we talk about copyleft: we claim copyright on
a program, and then use that copyright for a purpose quite different from
its original intent. We give users particular freedoms, like software in
the public domain does, but protect those freedoms for as many users as
possible, which cannot be accomplished by relinquishing copyright on the
software.

However, copyright must be claimed to apply a license which provides a
copyleft. Hence, not only is using the copyright symbol appropriate for
copylefted programs appropriate, it is necessary. Because of this, we feel
that petitioning for a copyleft symbol in Unicode would require too much
work at this time, given the gain that would come from it.

I hope this clears up the issue. If you have further questions, please
don't hesitate to contact me.

Free Software
Foundation.
Board of Directors of GNOME Foundation),

Unicode???
