 fixed this in CVS bonobo-conf, I will but michael to make a new
 release (0.11) or do it myself. The patch below does work though, just

+Just tried evo from 16 aug with bonobo-conf-0.11. Most bugs are still there, old bugs not fixed:
+* categories in drop down are nto recoded to locale's charset, they are shown in utf8
+* In "On $when $who wrote" localized "wrote" is substituted with "___"
+* In "From:" dropdown non-ascii are replaced with "___"
+Of course I killed ~/evolution before testing.
+Bugs fixed:
+Displaying account names with non-ascii in Options, and everywhere in 'Account Options' (i.e. when I select account in options and click "edit")
+New bugs: shortcut names ('calendar', 'contacts', 'mail' etc) are displayed as "__".
+My 'shortcuts.xml' contains lines like these
+    <item name="&#235;&#207;&#206;&#212;&#193;&#203;&#212;&#217;" type="contacts">evolution:/local/Contacts</item>
+though russian characters have unicode value > 0x400.
