I haven't looked at the X clipboard stuff in a long while but I am
pretty sure you get a notification when the clipboard gets replaced or
cleared; so in that case, you just unref yourself.

Hm, can you please explain this a bit more? I am not sure I follow
you here.
My feeling is that X can act as a clipboard server just fine. :-)
