ORBit back-ends

Is it possible to make ORBit use backends which are static libs?

I can't get ORBitCPP to build shared libraries so when I try to use orbit-idl -lc++ it can't find the backend.so that it's looking for.


Also, anyone know why gcc-2.95.2 fails to build shared libraries on a regular basis on my system (RH6.2 + libstdc++-2.90.8)? 
I've asked this on the gnu lists but no-one has bothered to answer, I though someone here might know.
