This sounds fairly common actually.  I remember embedding excel
spreadsheets in word documents.  When I wanted to edit the excel
spreadsheet, I would often want to edit them in a full screen excel
window.  This was achieved by double clicking, I believe. (It's been a
while.)

I'm not sure if this is quite what you mean about having a component that
can be edited both in place and externally, but it seems close.
