build/Makefile.in not found in gtk+

I'm trying to build gtk+ from cvs head. I get :-

docs/tutorial/Makefile.am:61: ... `pdf' previously defined here
configure.in:1686: required file `build/Makefile.in' not found
configure.in:1686: required file `build/win32/Makefile.in' not found
configure.in:1686: required file `build/win32/dirent/Makefile.in' not
found

can somebody tell me what's going on here ?
