slash applet bug cleanups

Hey people,
    Anyone home???
    Anyway, here's a start to my contributions:

slash_applet bugs 55956, 51128, 54289, 56121, (56145),
(56394), (52869), 53756, (54586), 55241, (56127),
(56156), (52938), 53523, 53779, 56137, (56163)

All of the ones without brackets are the same bug
(many races in the xml parse due to a delay when
refreshing the xml data file), the ones with brackets
are closely related (again, races when clearing out
internal data structures, while accessing the free'd
memory at the same time). They can all probably be
lumped under the one bug.
