ANNOUNCE: Asbestos 0.2

Asbestos 0.2 - "Houdini's Last Escape"
======================================

I'm pleased to announce the first public release of Asbestos.

Asbestos offers protection from firewalls, and acts as a poor man's VPN.

Have you ever found yourself tunneling various services through ssh, and
having to run through various applications, telling your mail client to
check for mail at localhost:12345 and send mail through localhost:12346?
Have you ever tunneled something like http, and found it seriously
distasteful, since any non-relative links leap outside of your
http://localhost:12347 sandbox?

This is the sort of problem that Asbestos seeks to solve. By utilizing
iptables (and eventually similar solutions for other platforms), it
allows transparent tunneling of services through ssh.

The obligatory screenshot is available at:

Right now, Asbestos is very fresh and rough around the edges, but
basically functional. The brave of heart can give it a whirl by checking
it out of Gnome CVS; the module is "asbestos". Please see the README
file for details about running it.

Patches are welcomed and greatly appreciated. Right now, it has been
only tested on a vey limited set of systems; any feedback about
portability issues (problems with different versions of iptables,
suggestions about iptables replacements, etc.) would be extremely
helpful.
