The i386 version might have had more testing, but if you have a 64 bit machine, try using the 64 bit version.
I would suggest you look into Orca, rather than Gnopernicus.
I find Orca easier to use and in general that it currently provides more accessibility than Gnopernicus. The underliing technologies for both to work like gnome-speech is the same.
