Gnopernicus doesn't speak

I have a feeling that this has come up over the last few months but I cant find it in the archives.
I have the same problem with SuSE 10 and Gentoo 2005.1.
Everything is installed and Sound works but Gnopernicus doesn't speak. There are no errors shown when I run gnopernicus from the console.
Any help appreciated
