Re: Help with Alsa

OK, I grabbed the 0.9.8 stuff.
I'm running kernel 2.4.20-6 - redhat 9.

Not sure what you mean by this. Where do I select/unselect this stuff?
removed everything sound related from the /etc/modules.conf file and
rebooted. Will this do it?

In any case, here's what I get when I compile the 0.9.8 driver and then do
make --quiet install... The configure and compilation phases went ok.

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.4.20-6/kernel/drivers/media/rad
io/miropcm20.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.4.20-6/kernel/drivers/media/vid

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.4.20-6/kernel/sound/pci/au88x0/
snd-au8820.o

... ... ...

Now I run modprobe, and here's what it does:

alsa-driver-0.9.8# modprobe snd-au8820
/lib/modules/2.4.20-6/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: unresolved symbol

/lib/modules/2.4.20-6/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.20-6/ker
nel/sound/acore/snd.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-6/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod snd-au8820 failed
alsa-driver-0.9.8#

Any ideas?

Ok here's what's going on with yoru ALSA. First off 0.9.8 is the latest
version of the drivers libs and utils so start by grabbing that. Check
your kernel config and make sure that you don't have any OSS sound
stuff at all selected. All you want to do is select soundcard support
itself which is the very first thing in the sound section. All other
things should be unselected. If you choose to have the sound support in
the kernel as a module make sure that it is loaded BEFORE you load the
ALSA stuff.
