I have the access-bridge installed (I verified the files are in the correct
locations).
I used the --with-freetts-dir=/usr/src/FreeTTS/lib.

The only difference from what you stated is that I got FreeTTS from cvs
rather than getting a tarball and unpacking it.

I still get the errors.
I even updated my gnome-speech package from cvs this morning.
