gnome-speech and braille users

It is my understanding that use of gnome-mag is optional--is this correct?
But it is also my understanding--although I'm not sure where I read this--that
gnome-speech has to be installed even if one is planning to use braille
exclusively. Am i correct in this assumption; if so, is it possible that this
will change somewhere down the road?
