Hmmm... In that case, what about regions in the canonical left half of the 
window.  Normally crossing the middle boundary stops text entry, which is 
generally what you want to do when switching to control mode.  If there were 
a target or two on the non-alphabet side of Dasher which switched modes, 
that would likewise allow potentially more rapid switching to the control box.

Just a thought to experiment with.
