I think part of the problem here is that we're trying to do something
that's never been done before[1], so whatever solution we come up with
is probably going to take a little getting used to. I agree that we
probably need to find one that doesn't generate quite so many complaints
though!

[1] In that, to the best of my knowledge, no other desktops have a
panel/dock thing that you can focus independently of the objects on it,
so none of them need a way of showing focus. This, perhaps, points to
our underlying problem... :)
