Accessibility was my motivation for b).  However, I really don't see why
you think such arguments apply to the list view but not the icon view.

I suppose so.  I guess I only suggested a) because Alex said he wanted
to configure the preference for the desktop and you said you wanted to
remove the preference for the list view.  Meanwhile I really don't see
any reason for removing the list view preference if we are going to keep
the icon view preference (if it is handy for the icon view then surely
it is also a handy for the list view).
