My only concern is that it still builds nicely with the Free software
solution alone: festival.

Is that the FreeTTS that is 'faster' than festival, after porting
festival(flite) to Java ;->
Anyway - it's good to see that things are coming along nicely, it'd be
even nicer if we could find some people to do some serious work on the
festival integration.
