I run GNOME over a Cable->ADSL VPN link occasionally, and it's fine.
800x600, using TightVNC, and the ThinIce GTK+ theme (which truly kicks
arse).
There are lots of things you can do to make it less-pretty-faster, such as
changing themes and restricting the amount of images you have on screen.
