Getting fonts for pango

In trying to bring up Nautilus, I wasn't seeing anything in the canvas area,
so I decided to try the libgnomecanvas canvas demo as a reality check.

When I tun the demo, it can't find any fonts. I get lots of warnings from
pango about pangoft2 not finding fonts and not finding a fontalias file.

What's wrong? What should I be doing to ensure that pango has a suitable set
of fonts so I can continue with Nautilus development?
