I asked Elliot - he said there used to be example code around that did
that, and I probably just cut-and-pasted it. I have no memory of why I
did it.

ChangeLog has this:

	* gconf/gconfd.c (main): don't use custom object ID

But that's for the daemon, this code we're discussing is on the client side.

Anyhow, I would suggest we remove the custom object ID in HEAD and see
if anything breaks.
