  Please upgrade to 1.8.9 , I did patch a couple of serious problems
(serious enough to motivate me to remake a release in the 1.x branch !)
RedHat 7 will ship with it an that's (nearly) what is in the CVS
libxml 1.x head (tag LIB_XML_1_BRANCH) and what should be used by
people doing developments with libxml-1.x

  should I upgrade the module myself ?
