I'm not really sure if that would maintain ABI compatibility in all
cases (I think changing a function to make it return anything word-sized
is fine, but I'm not sure about pointers).
(Also, I was thinking about whether to turn GNet objects into proper
GObjects at some point in the future, in which case you could just use
g_object_ref() instead).
