Yep, this is a planned improvement.
I worked on it a bit some time ago but I realized that due to some 
limitation and bug of gnome-vfs it will be not so easy to be implmented

hmmm... I think we should fix this problem (even if I know it is not 
easy to do, look also http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46117)
