Rick,

Thanks - that solved  the problem. I had to edit the horizontal and vertical 
sync rate in my XF86Config file to match the new monitor. The older monitor 
used higher rates (for the same resolution!). Everything works properly now.

BTW, to answer you question, after logging in, the display functioned 
correctly. It was just the display of the gdm login screen that was not 
working.
