Hmmm, should investigate with that.  In the meantime try:

--prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc/X11 --localstatedir=/var --enable-console-helper --with-pam-prefix=/etc

That goes over the redhat installation.  Else things will be in wrong places.
The reason why I think your installation didn't work with the rh9 rpm
installed is that the pam stuff was not installed where pam expected it and
thus the need for --with-pam-prefix=/etc .  I suppose I never tried how it
will work without the pam service installed, I suppose it just complains to
syslog instead of properly telling the user on the display or console
that the installation is b0rk.
