well actually it's my own home - it's my wife and children who are
bothered, not my parents!

at my place, the locale is actually the FC2 default (US english?)
and i'm trying the rebuilding rather than changing the string for
the locale. to be precise i have gdm 2.6.0.0 with some FC specific
patches, supplied with gdm-2.6.0.0-3.src.rpm,
so i'm also going to investigate if the problem disappears with
a newer gdm. i managed to rebuild and reinstall the original gdm
without apparent problems so i'm set do some experiments...
