Font size

I'm running gdm 2.4.1.6-2 under Debian sid.
How do I set the font size? I'm getting a ridiculously large font in
several window managers (around 40),
messing up desktops and application (headers, menus).
I wasn't able to find any information about default fonts in the gdm
documents
at http://www.jirka.org/gdm-documentation/t1.html
If I start the window manager (ice, gnome, kde) with .xsession, I don't
get the problem.
Appreciate your help or suggestions.
