Japanese yards off to slow start in FY2002
Japanese major shipyards made a slow but healthy start to the latest financial year recording newbuilding contracts for 27 ships of
896,550GT, according to figures from the Japan Ship Exporters Association.
While the number of ships was high the gross tonnage is half the
1.65 MGT seen in the corresponding month in the previous financial year. |

acquire Halter Marine
Friede Goldman Halter, Inc. says it has entered into a contract with Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. to sell the assets and activities of Halter Marine, Inc. for $48.0 million cash and other considerations.
Halter is one of three business units presently operated by Friede Goldman Halter and is a leading builder of small to medium sized vessels. |

HHI completes Samho takeover
Hyundai Heavy Industries(HHI) has completed its takeover plan of Samho Heavy Industries as planned on 15 May.
The world¡¯s largest shipbuilder paid £Ü100billion ($77.9M) to buy all of
Samho¡¯s 20million shares. The stock purchase was funded by internal cash reserves.
Together with Samho Heavy and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, HHI has built a ¡°Specialized shipbuilding
group", raising its annual shipbuilding capacity to 5.8M
GT. |

Star starts Korea-China World Cup link
Star Cruises is to resume operations between Korea and China on the eve of the 2002 World Cup, hoping massive Chinese interest in the football tournament will revive the link.
The 1,800dwt SuperStar Gemini (built 1992) will resume operations between the Korean port of Pyeongtaek and China's Qingdao and Dalian ports on May 30. |
