ANNOUNCE: GDM 2.3.90.5, the "Winter in Leningrad" release

THESESOUNDEFFECTSAREGETTINGOLDARENTTHEY

Yay! The time has come. Gdm is like frozen and stuff and ready for
a new release. So go forth and break it so I have something to fix.
If no major bugs are found, this will pretty much become the 2.4.0.0
release of gdm for the GNOME 2.0.0 release.

What's new this time? Yet again mostly fixes. And the language list now
isn't as broken as it was.

So no longer will I give the UNSTABLE warnings as this should now really be
stable. It's just not yet numbered as such. Of course you shouldn't ship
this release but it would be nice to test. There are actually quite a few
improvements over 2.2.5.5 which I will list in the final release, because
right now I'm too lazy to think of them.

And now for the standard part of the release announcement:

Ahh, so you have no clue what gdm is? Well if you've read this far ... let's
not get into that. Gdm is GNOME Display Manager, the little daemon that lets
you log in to your computer. It allows xdmcp multiple login displays,
selection of languages, multiple login sessions and generally is much cooler
then any xdm clone out there, mostly cuz it isn't an xdm clone to begin with.
I mean heck, it's even got a graphical configurator, so you don't have to use
the command line to hose your system anymore.

=====

Highlights of 2.3.90.5:

- Some work on making the language setup more sane and integrating
the graphical and the standard greeter language setups

- Added more untranslated language names (Changwoo Ryu, me)

- The graphical greeter now actually works with timed login stuff,
does enable/disable during configuration, and gives closing pam
comments after login is completed (such as that your pw will expire
  or such)

- The timed login time is now increased on any key or mouse press on
  any widget.

- The shipped locale.alias now lists all the languages we know,
and doesn't include any encodings or dups or other random garbage

- Xnest is now being passed the -kb argument to disable the xkb
extension on the Xnest as this just causes problems apparently. (#66610)

- The gdmXnestchooser command now actually uses the command you gave it
in the config file or on the command line

- The graphical greeter is actually translated, plus a bunch of
other translation issues are fixed (#82549)

- Possible crashes and random weird errors fixed by not using g_print
for communication (since that does charset conversions which we don't
  want to do)

- Translation updates (Jarkko Ranta, Stanislav Visnovsky, Kjartan Maraas,
Ole Laursen, Zbigniew Chyla, GNOME PL Team, Carlos Perelló Marín,
Christian Rose, Vincent van Adrighem, Duarte Loreto, me)

Note: Gdm2 was originally written by Martin K. Petersen <mkp mkp net>, and
is now maintained by the Queen of England. Although when she's not answering
her email I usually cover for her.

Note2: If installing from the tarball do note that make install overwrites
most of the setup files, all except gdm.conf and gnomerc. It will however
save backups with the .orig extension first.

Note3: Distributors, packagers. Please, PLEASE use the standard Gnome script
when setting things up as gnome, or at least equivalently working scripts. It
should never be OK to just exec gnome-session, that is considered bad form.
The script needs to read (if available) the ~/.gnomerc and otherwise read
the <sysconfdir>/gdm/gnomerc file. This allows users and administrators to
setup custom startup for gnome.

Have fun,

George

PS: Freeze is a boring time. No new features, no minor bugfixes ... no fun.
So in accordance (is that how you spell that?) with the freeze, this PS is
also boring. In fact I should just take the PS off to make this announcement
even more boring then it is. I should put long strings made up of a single
letter to make it more boring, and harder to find real information in. Like
this: wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
This will also take up more bandwidth and generally increase the unhappiness
in the world ... MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ...
