This would mean that gdm can't write to the home directory of the user you
are trying to log in as.  This is needed to write the X authorization
cookies.  It should however check the /tmp dir as well I think.  

Perhaps it's failing not at openning but at writing to the file.  Are you
sure you are not out of disk space or quota for that user?  Maybe gdm is
doing something wrong ...
