gdm will not start after tar restore of disk

Hi,

The short story is that my disk with /var and /tmp crashed hard.
Fortunately I had the time to make a tar archive of both directories.
The problem is that gdm won't start after having replaced the disk and
restored /tmp and /var. Everything was working perfectly before the
disk crash. Any idea what the problem and cure is ?

The version of gdm is:
	gdm-2.2.3.1-22

The content of "/var/log/gdm/:0.log" is:

*** Start of cat ***

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to xfree86 xfree86 org

*** End of cat ***

Invoking startx gives the same output except for:

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

which is appended to the above output.

I can see that gdm complains about some "fixed" font. I have

"/usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-7/75dpi/fixedgr.pcf.gz"

but I don't know if that is the one gdm is complaining about..

Thanks in advance !
