GDM errors with utmp & FreeBSD 4.2...

I'm getting this really odd set of errors with GDM... basically, when
run as a daemon or from init when GDM logs in a user it writes to utmp
that the user is logged in on /dev/display (i.e. /dev/:0 or /dev/:1)
which -- of course -- do not exist.

What's worse, is this is wreaking all sorts of havok on my system
because these users are never cleared from utmp once they log out... so
I end up with last entries which look like:

bacchusrx ttyv1 Sun Mar 25 14:22 - 14:48
(00:25)
root ttyv1 Sun Mar 25 14:15 - 14:22
(00:07)
bacchusrx ttyv0 Sun Mar 25 14:14 - 14:25
(00:11)
root ttyv0 Sun Mar 25 14:12 - 14:14
(00:01)
bacchusrx :1 console Sun Mar 25 14:07 still
logged in
bacchusrx :1 console Sun Mar 25 13:51 still

bacchusrx :1 console Sun Mar 25 13:50 still

bacchusrx :1 console Sun Mar 25 11:17 still
logged in
root ttyv0 Sun Mar 25 11:16 - 14:12
(02:55)
baphomet :0 console Sun Mar 25 11:13 - 11:15
(00:02)
baphomet :0 console Sun Mar 25 11:08 - 11:12
(00:04)
baphomet :0 console Sun Mar 25 11:02 - 11:03
(00:00)
ashley ttyv3 Sun Mar 25 11:02 - 11:22
(00:20)

And errors all over w, uptime, etc. which go something like:

uptime: /dev/:1: No such file or directory
uptime: /dev/:1: No such file or directory
uptime: /dev/:1: No such file or directory
uptime: /dev/:1: No such file or directory

uptime: /dev/:1: No such file or directory
uptime: /dev/:1: No such file or directory

uptime: /dev/:1: No such file or directory
 9:13AM up 20 days, 17:08, 1 user, load averages: 2.15, 2.06, 2.08

And I'm getting constant errors from syslogd claiming:

/dev/:1: No such file or directory.

I get an entry for each person who logs on via GDM...

There must be a way to stop this! But, freaky thing is, I can't find any
evidence anyone else ever has this issue...

I'm running FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE with XFree86 3.3.6... GDM 2.0beta4 or
however the notation goes... as a daemon with the following lines in
gdm.conf

0=/usr/X11R6/bin/X vt10
1=/usr/X11R6/bin/X vt11

Thanks for any help in advance,

Erik.
