Thanks for the tip. It's a RedHat 7.0 system (don't worry - I'm only 
administering myself:-). I got gdm working once I had installed glide 
and tweaked gnome session file and created a pam related symlink - I 
guess I should have used prefix, but I though it didn't matter because I 
had removed the original Gdm binary before installing this later version.
