User profiles in gconf

Hi!

During guadec-es we are getting lot of feedback from big GNOME
instalations: users and developers.

One of the most required features is an easy way of editing
default and mandatory settings in the dekstop. Just now it can done
using gconftool-2 directly but it's planned to include support for this
in gconf-edtior 2.8.

Beyond this, user profiles is another request. This would imply
some changes in gconf. Maybe adding some conditional includes in the
gconf path configuration file. For example:
[...]
xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory

# Students can not change their backgroung
{group=student}xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/local/gconf.xml.student.mandatory

# Users foo and bar needs bla bla
{user=foo,bar}xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/local/gconf.xml.bla.mandatory
[...]

What do you think about this?

Anyone knows how Sun Java Desktop 2 is doing configuration
profiles? Does it apply to gconf?

Salu2
