There are a couple problems:
- it would work, but it would still be broken code, since it would
ignore error and notifications
- some gnome_config_* code implicitly or explicitly assumes that
files are being edited. For example, saving a session and
saving "rm -rf ~/.gnome/foo" as the "discard" command.
Or .desktop file manipulation
