Hello Joseph,
I did what you tall me and in fact my gnome desktop seemes to work better now (for example, I have retreived my old panel menu which had deseapeard when I used the /etc/profile)
Unfortunatly it didn't solve the gnomemmetting execution problem and when I ldd the newly compiled gnomemeeting, it still list reference to /usr/lib which contains the gnome2.4 libs.
