You could make ld look for libs in the GARNOME dir first.

Bourne shells:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/path/to/garnome/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH"

C shells:
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /path/to/garnome/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
