Inclined to close this WONTFIX. NEEDINFO for now.

No info is needed. Everything is in the big report, including the proper fix. But if The Powers That Be want to keep using pointless non-portable GNUisms instead of standard SUSv3 etc. commands, there's nothing I can do about it. I just hate the current "all the world is Linux" idiocy, which is almost as bad as the old "all the world's a VAX" portability hell. We have standards, and we should use them.
