Have you tried adding /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig to gar.config.mk like
this:

PKG_CONFIG_PATH :=
$(libdir)/pkgconfig:/usr/lib/pkgconfig:/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig

Maybe we should add this?

Do you have gob installed?

[gnome chaucer ~]$ rpm -q gob2
gob2-2.0.11-3

I think Joseph posted a garball for gob to the list yesterday...
