Thanks for your kind reply. The problem was indeed shown in the 
config.log (forgot to check it, sorry) and was related to ld not finding 
libstdc++.so.6 for the running the C/C++ verification programs that were 
being built by configure. Turns out I forgot to add my 
gcc-3.4.3-prefix/lib dir to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Concerning the '-cflags-only-other' error, I figure it's caused by the 
version of the autotools I'm using. It seems harmless in this case.

Epiphany built just fine and the rest is ongoing (wanted to rebuild all 
GARNOME with my shiny new gcc :)

PS: as many of you have noticed, I try to always reply to the list when 
I found the solution to my problem. This is in the hope that the 
archives will help people.
I indeed am frustrated finding posts on mailing lists that relate to 
problems I encounter and seeing that there is no answer at the end ...
