Compile error: libtool: link: cannot find the library `/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la'

sorry for reposting, but i think that the subject of my posts have been too 
vague (compile error).

just in case no one has been following my little story, i am using a very 
modified redhat 9 box and i am trying to install garnome-2.6.1 from

here is the error i just can't get by

the crucial line seems to be

libtool: link: cannot find the library `/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la'

now, all the packages in platform were built and the gtk+ libraries installed 
in

/home/garnomeuser/garnome/lib

they were installed by the 'make paranoid-install' in the desktop directory 
(yes, i did one try to build platform first and then desktop but i get the 
same error).

the thing i don't get is that the 'make paranoid-install' it is looking for 
the library libgtk-x11-2.0.la in /usr/lib when it should know to look for it 
in /home/garnomeuser/garnome/lib.

alas, i cannot figure it out. if you notice the error comes in the vte build, 
which i think is one of the last to get built.  Sure enough, i was able to 
launch my new gnome desktop and it seemed to work.  however, i couldn't find 
a terminal program and i think that gnome-terminal needs vte, so that makes 
sense.  however, i did notice that the new gnome is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY 
faster than the old.  Specifically, nautilus is super fast as compared to 
being a slow clunky pig in gnome-2.4.  it seems like the new gnome is really 
nice, if i could only get it to work...
