Sounds like it might be the infamous XDG_DATA problem. Make sure the shared-mime-info package is installed, then set both XDG_DATA_HOME and XDG_DATA_DIRS to $GARNOME/share in .xsession and .tcshrc/.bash_profile. There seems to be some disagreement as to whether the .xsession is required, but it was for me. You'll need to log out and log back in to see if it worked. Thanks, John A.
